Environment Product Declaration

As  sustainability becomes a key factor in global trade, businesses need to  show in a standardised and credible way how their products are good for  the environment. An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a  third-party-verified document that tells you how a product affects the  environment over its whole life.

EPDs are based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data and follow the rules  set out in ISO 14025 and EN 15804. They help manufacturers and exporters  meet government rules, support green procurement, and build brand  trust. We help businesses with every step of the EPD process at Greenex  Environmental. This includes doing the LCA, making the paperwork,  getting third-party verification, and registering the EPD  internationally.

Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)

The LCI phase focuses on detailed data collection of inputs and outputs across the lifecycle, such as raw materials, energy use, emissions, water consumption, and waste.

Life Cycle Impact Assessment

In this step, the collected data is translated into measurable environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, acidification, eutrophication, and water scarcity.

Product Development

LCA supports eco-design principles by enabling R&D teams to create products that meet consumer demand for sustainable solutions.

Why it Matters

  • EPDs are required for certain types of products in many markets, including the EU construction sector. These products include cement, steel, packaging, and textiles.

  • More and more global buyers, especially in the construction, retail, and FMCG sectors, want suppliers to give them verified EPDs. An EPD makes it more likely that you will be able to bid on international contracts and be included in the supply chain.

  • Unlike marketing claims, EPDs are checked by a third party, which gives customers, regulators, and other interested parties confidence that the sustainability data is real.

  • Companies can market their products as environmentally friendly, stand out in crowded markets, and appeal to eco-conscious customers with verified EPDs.

For decision-makers like CXOs, CSOs, ESG managers, procurement heads, and product developers, LCA provides not just insights but also actionable pathways to create lasting sustainability impact while improving brand value.

The Four Phases of Lifecycle Assessment

goal(1).png

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

The foundation of every EPD begins with a detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This process quantifies the environmental impacts of a product from raw material extraction to disposal. By analyzing energy use, emissions, and resource consumption, LCA ensures that the EPD reflects accurate, science-based sustainability data for transparent product evaluation.

Following Product Category Rules (PCRs)

Product Category Rules (PCRs) define how LCAs should be conducted for specific product types, ensuring consistency and comparability. They outline methodologies, functional units, and reporting formats, making EPDs reliable across industries. Following PCRs guarantees that each declaration adheres to globally accepted standards for credible and standardized environmental reporting.

Verification by a Third Party

Independent third-party verification ensures the accuracy and credibility of the EPD. Accredited verifiers assess data, methodologies, and calculations used in the LCA to confirm compliance with PCRs and international guidelines. This validation process builds trust among stakeholders, enhances market acceptance, and certifies that the EPD meets rigorous sustainability standards.

Publication & Registration

Once verified, the EPD is published and registered under recognized systems such as the International EPD System. This step makes the product’s environmental performance publicly available, enabling transparency and recognition in global markets. Publication and registration demonstrate accountability, support certifications, and strengthen the brand’s sustainable reputation.

Standards and the Legal Situation

EPDs follow the ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards, which make sure that product environmental data is accurate, clear, and easy to compare. These rules help with eco-labeling, certifications, and requirements for buying goods that are good for the environment around the world.

ISO 14025 & EN 15804 aligned EPD services for eco-labeling, transparency, and sustainable product recognition.

  • ISO 14025 – The core standard for EPDs, ensuring consistency and comparability.

  • EN 15804 – Specific to construction products in the EU, widely recognized worldwide.

  • ISO 14040/44 – Frameworks for conducting the LCA that underpins every EPD.

  • Product Category Rules (PCRs) – Ensure EPDs follow sector-specific guidelines.

These standards ensure consistency, credibility, and global recognition of EPD results.

Everything You Need to Know

From technology to timelines, find all the key answers in one simple place.

  • Solar energy is electricity generated from sunlight using photovoltaic (PV) panels. These panels absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC), which is then transformed into usable alternating current (AC) by an inverter to power your home or business.

  • Yes. While the upfront cost may vary, solar systems drastically reduce monthly electricity bills and often pay for themselves within 5–7 years. Many countries also offer incentives, tax credits, or feed-in tariffs to further enhance savings.

  • Most solar panels are designed to last 25 to 30 years. Even after that, they continue to produce electricity at around 80% of their original efficiency, making them a long-term investment.

  • Not necessarily. Batteries are optional and allow you to store excess energy for later use or during power outages. Without batteries, your system can still function by exporting excess power to the grid.
