Life Cycle Assessment

In  today’s business landscape, sustainability is not just a buzzword, it  is a critical driver of growth, compliance, and competitive advantage.  With increasing global awareness of climate change, resource scarcity,  and regulatory pressures, organizations are expected to demonstrate  accountability across their value chains. Customers, investors,  regulators, and stakeholders all demand greater transparency into  environmental performance.

This is where Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) becomes indispensable. By  evaluating environmental impacts across the entire lifecycle of a  product or process from raw material extraction to end-of-life  disposals, LCA provides a clear and scientifically robust view of  sustainability performance. At Greenex Environmental, we simplify the  complexity of LCA through independent verification, data-driven  insights, and scalable solutions aligned with ISO standards and  international frameworks. Our approach empowers businesses to make  informed

Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)

The LCI phase focuses on detailed data collection of inputs and outputs across the lifecycle, such as raw materials, energy use, emissions, water consumption, and waste.

Life Cycle Impact Assessment

In this step, the collected data is translated into measurable environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, acidification, eutrophication, and water scarcity.

Product Development

LCA supports eco-design principles by enabling R&D teams to create products that meet consumer demand for sustainable solutions.

Why it Matters

  • Ensure alignment with international standards like ISO 14040/44, ISO 14025, and support compliance for environmental certifications.

  • Pinpoint the most impactful areas in product’s lifecycle, from supply chain emissions to product disposal, resources are focused on high-priority actions.

  • Anticipate and reduce regulatory, reputational, and operational risks while avoiding greenwashing claims.

  • Improve manufacturing efficiency, reduce energy and water use, and minimize waste while lowering overall costs.

For decision-makers like CXOs, CSOs, ESG managers, procurement heads, and product developers, LCA provides not just insights but also actionable pathways to create lasting sustainability impact while improving brand value.

The Four Phases of Lifecycle Assessment

goal(1).png

Goal & Scope Definition

This phase lays the groundwork for the study by making it clear what the LCA's goals are, what the system's limits are, and what the functional unit is. For instance, do you want to compare two types of packaging, check for compliance with an EPD, or look at how efficient the process is? At Greenex, we help our clients make sure that these definitions fit in with their bigger business goals, legal requirements, and communication goals. This makes sure that the assessment gives them useful information.

Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)

The LCI phase is all about gathering detailed information about inputs and outputs throughout the lifecycle, like raw materials, energy use, emissions, water use, and waste. It needs people from different departments, suppliers, and facilities to work together. We use advanced data management systems to keep sensitive company data safe, reduce errors, and make sure that all data is consistent.

Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA)

At this point, the data that has been gathered is turned into measurable effects on the environment, such as greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, acidification, eutrophication, and water scarcity. LCIA gives businesses numbers that show them where their biggest effects are. For instance, a company might find that 70% of its environmental impact comes from activities of its upstream suppliers. This would shift the company's focus to optimising its supply chain.

Interpretation & Reporting

The last step is to look at the results, figure out the trade-offs, and suggest strategies. At Greenex, we don't just report; our team turns technical findings into plans that management, marketing, and compliance teams can use. This makes the LCA results useful and ready to be used in decision-making, not just a scientific paper.

Standards and the Legal Situation

More and more governments and regulators around the world are requiring businesses to be open about their environmental impact. Following international LCA standards not only makes a company look more trustworthy, but it also helps them avoid fines, keep their certifications, and win over customers. For some types of products, like packaging and building materials, LCAs and EPDs are already required by law in some markets.

ISO  14040 is the comprehensive standard covering all four phases of an LCA.  In addition, there are four supplementary standards that provide  specific guidance:

  • ISO 14041 – Focuses on goal and scope definition and life cycle inventory methods.

  • ISO 14042 – Outlines life cycle impact assessment methods.

  • ISO 14043 – Covers life cycle interpretation methods.

  • ISO 14044 – Specifies requirements and provides guidelines for conducting an LCA.

These standards ensure consistency, credibility, and global recognition of LCA results.

Everything You Need to Know

From technology to timelines, find all the key answers in one simple place.

  • Solar energy is electricity generated from sunlight using photovoltaic (PV) panels. These panels absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC), which is then transformed into usable alternating current (AC) by an inverter to power your home or business.

  • Yes. While the upfront cost may vary, solar systems drastically reduce monthly electricity bills and often pay for themselves within 5–7 years. Many countries also offer incentives, tax credits, or feed-in tariffs to further enhance savings.

  • Most solar panels are designed to last 25 to 30 years. Even after that, they continue to produce electricity at around 80% of their original efficiency, making them a long-term investment.

  • Not necessarily. Batteries are optional and allow you to store excess energy for later use or during power outages. Without batteries, your system can still function by exporting excess power to the grid.
